Akamai Reports a 133% ChatGPT Visibility Gain From an AI-Ready Website
Akamai says its presence in ChatGPT rose 133% against competitors after it began serving an AI-ready version of its website alongside the human one. The B2B cloud and security company reported the figure as its own first customer for AI Brand Presence, a product it built to help brands show up in AI-generated answers.
The Numbers Behind Akamai’s AI Brand Presence Results
Akamai piloted the technology on its global website. It served a machine-readable version of the site in parallel with the version people see. Akamai says this shrank the data load AI systems had to process by 99%, making its information easier for models to digest.
The company reported three results. Citations of Akamai rose 85%. Brand presence rose 364% for general searches where Akamai was not mentioned by name. Inside ChatGPT specifically, presence rose 133% compared with competitors.
Akamai framed the work against a shift in how people find information. The company says it observed a 300% year-over-year increase in AI bot traffic to its properties. It also pointed to research finding that nearly 60% of searches now end without a click.
Patrick Sullivan, CTO of Security Strategy at Akamai, described the change in blunt terms. “Businesses face the risk of digital invisibility,” he said. “If you’re not the primary source of truth for the AI models your customers trust, you effectively don’t exist.” Kim Salem-Jackson, Akamai’s Chief Marketing Officer, said the criteria for a good website have changed. “In addition to providing an exceptional human user experience, you need to optimize your site for AI comprehension and retrieval so that you’re the source that AI trusts for its answers,” she said.
The product itself pairs two things: automatic delivery of AI-readable content at the edge, and a dashboard showing which AI models visit a site and what they read. Akamai calls the practice generative engine optimization, or GEO, which means shaping content so AI answer engines can find, understand and cite it. AI Brand Presence launched in limited availability with a phased rollout, starting with select customers in North America.
Where Akamai’s ChatGPT Visibility Figures Come From
Every figure here comes from Akamai’s own press release announcing AI Brand Presence, published on May 19, 2026, and from the AI Brand Presence product page. Akamai measured its own website using its own product. No independent party verified the results. The story circulated again in trade press in August 2026, which is what brought it back into view for B2B marketers.
How GEO Fits B2B Search Strategy in 2026
Akamai’s numbers land in a year when AI search moved from side channel to main channel for B2B. Research covered here found that AI search has overtaken SEO as the top B2B content distribution channel. The mechanics of getting cited also changed. Ahrefs data showed that only 38% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in the top 10, which means a strong search ranking no longer guarantees a citation. And SparkToro found that 68% of Google searches now end without a click, so the answer itself is increasingly the destination.
Akamai’s contribution is a specific technical lever: change what you serve to the machine, not just what you write for the human. That is a different move from publishing more content and hoping models pick it up.
Talking Shift: A Vendor Grading Its Own Homework Still Teaches You the Method
Start Some Shift takes these numbers with the caution any vendor case study deserves. Akamai chose the test, ran it on itself, and sells the fix. We have flagged this pattern before, when Perplexity co-authored a study praising its own AI agents. Treat 133% as a marketing number until someone independent repeats it.
The method is a different matter. Serving a separate machine-readable version of your site is a real, testable idea, and most B2B brands have not tried it. Start Some Shift’s take: “Doubt the vendor’s number and copy the vendor’s experiment.” Run it on one product section, measure citations before and after, and you own a figure you can defend to your own board.
What B2B Marketers Should Do About AI Search Visibility
- Measure your citation rate in ChatGPT and Google AI answers now, so you have a baseline before you change anything.
- Test a machine-readable version of one high-value section of your site rather than committing to a full rebuild.
- Check your server logs for AI bot traffic, since Akamai’s 300% growth figure suggests the crawlers are already there.
- Give an AI answer a reason to name you over a rival, because your brand sits in a short list of options inside a single response.
- Track unbranded queries separately from branded ones, since Akamai’s largest gain came from searches that never mentioned its name.
- Ask any GEO vendor for a customer result that is not their own website before you sign.
- Assign one person to own AI visibility reporting, or the metric will stay a slide nobody updates.
What to Watch Next in Generative Engine Optimization
Watch for the first independently verified GEO case study from a brand with no product to sell in the category. Watch too whether AI Brand Presence moves out of limited availability, since a wider rollout would produce results from customers who did not build the tool.
