SE Ranking study: Google AI Mode shows ads on 29.45% of commercial queries

Google’s AI Mode shows a text ad on nearly 1 in 3 commercial searches. That is the finding from a new SE Ranking study published July 15, 2026. The study checked 50,032 commercial keywords. Ads showed up on 14,733 of them, or 29.45%. But buying that ad slot rarely got advertisers a citation or an organic ranking for the same search.

What the SE Ranking Google AI Mode ads study found

SE Ranking studied 50,032 commercial keywords across 20 niches, about 2,500 keywords per niche. The team pulled US AI Mode results on June 30, 2026. Ads first showed up in AI Mode in late 2025. By mid-2026, almost one in three searches in the study showed a text ad. SE Ranking says the real number could be even higher, since AI Mode results change from session to session.

Price mattered more than anything else. Cheap keywords, under $2 per click, showed ads only 24.33% of the time. Keywords between $2 and $10 showed ads 32.45% of the time. Keywords over $10 per click showed ads 53.56% of the time, more than double the cheapest group. Search volume and keyword difficulty did not move the numbers the same way.

Ad frequency also swung wildly by industry. Pet-related searches topped the list at 72.38%. Healthcare sat at the bottom, at just 2.64%. SE Ranking says that gap likely comes from more informational searches and Google’s extra caution around sensitive health topics.

Most ad slots were crowded too. Two advertisers showed up together on 71.1% of queries that triggered ads. Only 28.9% of those queries showed just one advertiser.

Here is the study’s biggest finding. Paying for the ad slot barely helps you get cited. Only 11.53% of advertiser domains also showed up as a cited source for the same keyword. Look at the exact URL, and that number drops to 1.95%. Organic rankings tell the same story. Just 2.32% of advertised URLs also ranked organically for their own ad’s keyword. At the domain level, that rises to 15.35%. About 85% of advertisers did not show up anywhere in organic results for the keywords they paid to advertise on.

Where the Google AI Mode ads data comes from

Search Engine Land reported these findings on July 15, 2026. The reporting draws on SE Ranking’s original study, published that same day.

Why AI Mode ad frequency matters for B2B advertisers

B2B marketers already know a good rank does not guarantee a click. Zero-click search now swallows 68% of Google searches. This study adds a new wrinkle for paid media. Buying a slot inside the AI answer does not buy your way into the answer itself. AI search has already become B2B marketers’ top channel for getting content in front of buyers, according to 10Fold’s 2026 research. OpenAI is racing to build its own ad surface inside ChatGPT too, with a multi-advertiser test rolling out to five new markets. Paid placement inside an AI answer is becoming a real budget line. Marketers need to know what it actually buys them.

Talking Shift: a bought impression and a trusted citation are two different currencies

For twenty years, paid search taught marketers a simple lesson: a good ad and a good page help each other over time. This data breaks that lesson. Paying Google for a slot inside an AI Mode answer buys attention. It does almost nothing for the separate decision the model makes about which sources to trust and cite. Start Some Shift’s read: B2B marketers are now playing two different games. Each game has its own scorecard, one for the ad auction and one for algorithmic trust. A brand that only funds the auction is renting a seat at the table while the model quietly decides who actually gets to speak. Buying the ad gets you seen. It does not get you believed.

What the AI Mode ads data means for B2B marketers

  • Stop assuming an AI Mode ad buy will boost your citation rate. This data shows it almost never does.
  • Budget for citation-building and paid placement separately. They are two different goals.
  • Expect ad costs to keep rising on your best keywords. Ads already show up twice as often above $10 CPC.
  • Check whether your top keywords already show a crowded slot with two advertisers, since that is now the norm on 71% of ad-triggering queries. Make sure your ad copy gives searchers a clear reason to click yours over the other one.
  • Write pages that earn citations on their own merit. Make them specific, sourced, and quotable. Paid media will not do that work for you.
  • Track citation and organic-overlap rates for your own ad keywords, not just clicks and conversions.

What to watch next on Google AI Mode ads

Watch whether Google adds new AI Mode ad formats beyond text ads. Watch too whether the citation gap closes as the format matures past its first year. This data is a single snapshot of a fast-changing surface, so it is worth re-checking before year end.
