OpenAI expands ChatGPT Ads with new bidding and carousel formats
OpenAI added conversion-optimized cost-per-click (oCPC) bidding, automatic advanced matching and a new multi-product carousel format to ChatGPT Ads on August 7, 2026. The company also plans to launch ChatGPT Ads in Brazil and Mexico within the week. Search Engine Land first reported the update, based on an OpenAI product newsletter sent to advertisers.
What changed in ChatGPT Ads this week
Product feed campaigns on ChatGPT Ads now support oCPC bidding in beta. Advertisers pay per click but the system optimizes toward conversions, using a fixed or manual bid cap. Advertisers can clone an existing cost-per-click campaign into an oCPC campaign or create new oCPC campaigns in bulk.
OpenAI also added dynamic URL parameters, so advertisers can automatically append campaign, ad group and ad IDs to landing page links for easier tracking. On the measurement side, ChatGPT Ads now connects to Triple Whale for cross-channel performance tracking, to Sonar Optimize for stronger conversion signals, and to Hightouch for sending conversion events directly into the platform. Ads Manager also gained detailed Pixel validation diagnostics, so advertisers can see why a conversion event was dropped and how to fix it.
Automatic advanced matching (AAM), which matches website form data to ad conversions, is now the default for new web pixels. OpenAI will turn it on for existing pixels starting August 17, 2026, unless advertisers opt out first. OpenAI is also testing a carousel ad format that shows multiple products from one advertiser inside a single unit, and plans to open ChatGPT Ads to advertisers in Brazil and Mexico in the coming week.
Who reported the ChatGPT Ads update
Search Engine Land reporter Anu Adegbola covered the changes on August 7, 2026, drawing on an OpenAI product update newsletter sent directly to advertisers. The newsletter laid out each feature change in a bulleted list, which Search Engine Land reproduced in full.
Why the ChatGPT Ads update matters for B2B marketers
ChatGPT Ads launched with a narrow feature set. This update adds the bidding automation, attribution tooling and measurement partners that performance marketers expect from an established ad platform. OpenAI has been moving fast here. It only recently expanded ChatGPT Ads to five new markets and began testing multi-advertiser ad slots, and this bidding and carousel update builds directly on that expansion. Google is making a similar bet on AI-driven automation inside its own ad products, most visibly through its push to move advertisers onto AI Max bidding. B2B brands testing early-stage AI ad surfaces are also watching how those placements actually get cited. A separate study found that Google’s own AI Mode ads reach nearly a third of commercial queries but rarely earn a citation back to the advertiser, a reminder that visibility in an AI surface and credit for that visibility are not the same thing.
Talking Shift: automation lowers the floor, not the ceiling, on ChatGPT Ads
Start Some Shift reads this update as OpenAI copying the ad-tech playbook that took Google and Meta years to build, compressed into months. Automated bidding and matching remove the busywork of running a ChatGPT Ads campaign, but they do not fix a weak product feed or a generic offer. “OpenAI just made it easier to run a bad ChatGPT ad efficiently,” says Lara McCulloch, President of Start Some Shift. Established B2B brands that test this platform early should treat the automation as a floor, not a strategy: it removes friction, but the product data, targeting logic and creative still have to earn the click.
What B2B marketers should do about the ChatGPT Ads update
B2B teams testing or planning to test ChatGPT Ads have several concrete steps to take now.
- Audit your product feed data quality before turning on oCPC bidding, since automated bidding amplifies whatever signal it is given.
- Decide now whether to opt out of automatic advanced matching before the August 17 default, especially if your legal team has data-sharing concerns.
- Connect Triple Whale, Sonar Optimize or Hightouch if you already use one, since native integrations reduce manual reconciliation work.
- Remember that a ChatGPT ad shows up next to organic answers and other advertisers’ carousels in the same response, so the product image and price need to win the click on sight, not just on relevance.
- Watch your Pixel validation diagnostics weekly to catch dropped conversion events before they skew bidding decisions.
- Hold off on the Brazil and Mexico launch until OpenAI publishes local measurement and compliance details, if you operate in those markets.
